Jef K & Chris Carrier - Windtalkers EP

  • Jef K and Chris Carrier first joined forces in 2009, putting out no-frills disco edits through the former's Silver Network imprint. A year later, they teamed up with Chez Damier to form The Gathering, a collaboration that resulted in one of the best house tracks of recent times: "In My System." Back in the studio for the first time since, K and Carrier land here on Ibiza label Vitalik. The EPs original cuts, "The Beat" and "Windtalkers," show two contrasting sides to the duo's style. The former is a markedly dry tech house record that attaches comet-like synths and stuttered vocal snippets to a competent if slightly ordinary groove. "Windtalkers" is deeper and more adventurous, allowing the track's supple bassline to wade through delicate licks, hovering synths and a meditative spoken-word sample. Neither, however, is a patch on the remixes. First up is label chief Ryan O'Gorman, producing under his Soulade alias. With its stripped-back drums, cascading synths and warped modulations, his take on "Windtalkers" deviates so far from the original it's practically a different track (and a better one, at that.) Amir Alexander's remix, while sticking closer by the original's murky sound, offers more character, engaging you with its winning combination of mildly jagged pads and warm, tender melodies.
