Afrique C'est Chic

  • This release of 'house music influenced by modern Africa' is up to the usual high Slip 'n' Slide standards, and it's clear that a lot of care has gone into the track selection. Mixed by the reliably cool Aloha Pussycats, it's a collection to brighten up the darkest European winter night. Bookended by Blaze tracks, the real finds in here are towards the centre. Djaimin and the Oule Oule Family appear with the original vocal mix of 'Children Of Afrika', a tune that was big at the Notting Hill Carnival in August. Dennis Ferrer tells us the story of 'Funu', and there's Kerri Chandler's 'Coro', a perfect blend of the Big Apple and Africa. Another choice cut arrives courtesy of Alton Miller's take on Jacob Desvarieux from the ever reliable Distance label. Some of the more tribal offerings from the likes of T-Kolai are worth hearing too. An enjoyable package from Kickin' then, with a smile on its face and a fantastic cover to boot. Well worth exploring, especially if you went for Defected's 'Africanism' comp last year.
