Roi Okev & Hakimonu – A Horse With No Name

  • While Hakimonu has carved out a niche in recent years as a producer of lush, atmospheric house and techno, he's occasionally worked with fellow Israeli artists. One that's already joined him on his eponymous digital imprint is Roi Okev, who's also done solo tracks for the likes of Little Helpers and Resopal Schallware. Their new collaborative effort, A Horse With No Name, once again has the duo balancing Okev's more floor-focused sensibility with Hakimonu's hazier, laid-back style. Both the original and the "Re Work" make use of the same primary elements—a spare, woozy vocal and a swell of trippy synth noise—while sticking firmly to a 4/4 beat augmented by rough-hewn hand percussion. The original is sleek and minimal, and maybe more DJ-friendly, but at times it feels a little too empty. Moving in similarly low-slung fashion, the other version's psychedelic indulgence makes it the more interesting cut. Right from the start, it's suffused with warm, glitchy effects and an undulating drone, and later on it slinks through a lengthy drop. In the right hands and on certain sun-drenched dance floors, it's sure to mesmerize.
