Dollska - So Long For A Small Storm

  • Dollska made her debut on Optimo Music six years ago with Zodiac Rising, a house record full of regal arpeggios and nimble synth melodies that gestured to a broad scope of electronic music influences. Then known as Dollskabeat, Lucy Ross edges away from that record's centre ground with So Long For A Small Storm, her first release in more than two years and her third since 2009. As with Zodiac Rising, Dollska uses a small palette of hot and cold sounds to put her personality across. "So Long For A Small Storm" is a smooth electronic pop song with a hushed vocal from Ross and a gently churned groove that evokes Italo. "So Long For A Small Storm" is easy to like, though it might be too cool for its own good—it seems caught between Ross's naturally laconic approach and a disco sensibility, however muted, that demands a bit more passion. Gerald Donald's remix makes this more apparent. By turning Ross into an androgynous cipher and showering "So Long For A Small Storm" with icy synth notes, it gives the song a more defined emotion: menace. "Opus Dreams," an electronic lullaby, is further proof that Dollska's most inspired music is a little frostbitten.
