Jon Convex / Light Year - CONVEX010

  • Damon Kirkham seems to be going through a bit of an identity crisis. The former member of Instra:mental recently booted up a new label, reverting to his Kid Drama alias and making Autonomic-style drum & bass again. But it hasn't overshadowed the impact of what came before. With the latest EP for Convex Industries, the UK producer revisits 2013's Zero Point EP, an electro-heavy compilation featuring the likes of J. Tijn, Light Year and Sei A. This remix 12-inch streamlines two of its tracks into no-frills techno, courtesy of Matrixxman and Mr. G. Kirkham's "Day After Day," written under his Jon Convex alias, was a banner example of his post-Autonomic style: techno with an electroclash snarl. Matrixxman is all-business on his remix, making "Day After Day" sound like a particularly austere leftover from his Homesick LP. It features playful drum programming and killer pacing—the moment when it boils over into percolating dub-techno chords is one of Matrixxman's 2015 highlights. Mr. G goes moody for his take on Light Year's Turbo-styled "Inside," weighing it down with a crunchy rhythm and shading it with some jazzy chords. It's less of a revelation than Matrixxman's contribution, but no less slick. Why Kirkham has commissioned a remix EP for an old project when he appears to be moving on is puzzling, but regardless, good techno is good techno.
