Various - CRTL003

  • It's no surprise that the latest Cartulis Music release comes from two affiliates of the London label. As a party, Cartulis Day is particularly notable for its tight-knit regular crowd and familial atmosphere on the dance floor. Its third record, from returning guests Anton Zap and Tommy Vicari Jnr, benefits from that in-house emphasis. Named after Cartulis Day's old home, Anton Zap's "Crucifix Lane" is a tense, tightly-wound techno banger. On first listen, it appears to sacrifice some of Zap's lightness of touch for an all-out assault. Yet within its loopy intensity there's enough spiky textures and subtle changes of register to reward repeat listens. If "Crucifix Lane" resembles Cartulis Day's sweaty 4AM peak, then Tommy Vicari Jnr's A-side is the hazy after-hours. Vicari Jnr has made all sorts of dance music across his long career, but few selections match "Volatiles Pt 1" for beguiling, trippy beauty. It's likely why the third Cartulis Music record has gained so much traction, though CRTL003 is best appreciated as a whole—two members of the family, soundtracking different points of a memorable party.
