Roman Flügel and Efdemin in Brussels

  • Attending Fuse is always a memorable experience. Belgians have a rich clubbing history, and the Brussels club stands testament to this. On August 22nd, longstanding local institution Lessizmore was given the run of the place, inviting Roman Flügel and Efdemin to perform at the venue's season re-opening. The Lessizmore parties usually unfold in Fuse's second room, but on this occasion they were given the main floor. For those who haven't been, it's a remarkable spot. You get the sense that a lot of time and effort has gone into it, from the sound system and the lasers to the selection of Belgian beers on offer. Flügel played first, turning out a weird and lively set. The music ebbed and flowed nicely, and you could tell he was testing and toying with the crowd a bit. His set reached its apex just before the end, when he dropped DJ Sprinkles's remix of The Mole's "Lockdown Party." Not long after, he stepped aside and let Efdemin take the floor. The Dial mainstay was less varied in his approach, spinning melodic techno with a solid core. The crowd loved it and mostly stayed until the end, when Efdemin left the decks to the residents. Pierre, Deg and Issa Maïga were very impressive—in fact, they outshone the headlining guests. They showed an intimate understanding of the venue and its audience, building and sustaining an atmosphere in a way I've rarely seen before.
