H. Bergqvist - Trouble 002

  • Stockholm label Trouble In Paradise debuted in August with HBNG's EP1, which featured the enormous piano-house earworm "Planet Sunday." The label has followed it with this four-tracker from co-owner Henrik Bergqvist. His label may be new, but the producer's trio of EPs have established his sound, a gritty style of house that always has a sense of fun and melody. Those characteristics are there on Trouble 002. Opener "Our City" is the most memorable, with an emphatic synth that zig-zags over rolling drums and FX. "Blueshift II" uses its percussive clank ominously, and the soot-cloaked bass feeds the darkness. It's all offset by the track's pace, though, plus the vivid keys that further lighten the mood later on. The industrial "HB Theme" and the humid "Ball's Pyramid" are low-key by comparison, though both will work well in dark rooms. Nothing on Trouble 002 eclipses HBNG's "Planet Sunday," but unlike the first Trouble In Paradise release, this one keeps the quality consistent throughout.
