Callahan - Don't Need EP

  • There's a simplicity to Callahan's Don't Need EP that's stuck between staunch efficiency and rote technique. Little here has the invigoration of fresh ideas, the excitement of reinvention, or the flair of a gifted producer. Each of the three original tracks upholds a basic rhythm, a flat melodic theme and only the most familiar FX and textures. "Don't Need" clings to its pitched-down vocal sample like a child with a deflated balloon, while "Protocol" and "Everytime" grasp for an edge within tight, boomy reverb. This lack of unique material is compounded by Callahan's stale sense of dynamics and movement. Only "Protocol" remains engaging for the duration, thanks largely to an overwhelming tempo and regular blasts of forceful low-end. Hodge's remix of the title track livens up the package. With sparks of dub, trance and electro, the Bristol producer shocks a monotonous original production into a powerful tune that smacks harder and wholly captivates. Even the way Hodge treats the titular mantra—taking the air out of the voice and letting it rattle on a short delay—catches the ear in seconds. The remix is certainly worth a download if you're in the market for bold, bass-loaded UK techno, but it won't likely save the rest of Don't Need from fading into obscurity.
