Wabi Sabi - Pt. 1

  • Purple Trax is a party and label by Brooklyn promoter Weird Magic, whose bookings extend from New York outsider house to hip-hop and edgy, bassier sounds. And while eclecticism seems a credo for the collective—their debut compilation featured Huerco S. and Traxman, for example—so does pushing local experimental acts. As Wabi Sabi, resident Jan Woo and headman Erez Avissar collaborate with Terekke, whose few but stellar records make him a standout for many leftfield fans. If that doesn't turn heads, Pt. 1's dreamy and dark atmospheres will. Each track here is simply constructed but still has plenty of feeling. The A-side in particular benefits from Terekke's subtlty. "Moon River Membrane" is a melodic and peaceful drifter with a washy, cross-eyed breakdown, while "Babi," a soft but fiery house roller, is flush with unconventional soul. The B-side is cold and harder, which proves better to get lost in. Featuring fellow Brooklynite Patricia, "Casper" is the record's trippiest tune, a sly groove steaming with ghostly pads and worn textures. "Rx" ignites the same reclusive part of the brain, but for a club setting. That one is a stormy cut of dubwise techno, overflowing with the kind of haze and echoes that make Pt. 1 so delicately deep.
