XXX - Noorder Scannen

  • Poverty Is Violence is a new label from Nick Dunton (AKA 65D Mavericks) and Charlton. XXX is a veteran Dutch artist whose identity is unknown, and Noorder Scannen is their first record under that name—that's about as much backstory as they want us to know here. "Don't Get Fat" gets straight to business with its grotty acid twist on modern industrial techno. Together with its counterpart "Got Your Sister," which screeches and bangs with more fervour, those two tracks would work served up with a side of Ansome, Damcase or even one of Charlton's own tunes. But this isn't trying to be a Mord record—it's resolutely for hardware heads who like the rough with the smooth. "Got Your Sister" stands out as the most fraught track on Noorder Scannen, though that's not its overall tone. Yes, the EP is raucous and rusty, but tracks like "Got Your Mother" show more restraint. The quiet "Don't Stop" sits at the other end of the scale, sounding genteel by comparison. Meowing and dribbling over a simple drum loop, it's the most brazenly outlandish of the lot, and yet unassuming and elegant, too, like a palate cleanser between heavier courses. "Worked With Your Girl" ends Noorder Scannen on a grim groove, with a raggedy bassline that's sounds like it's been pushed to the limit.
