- Whities, the label run by former Boiler Room host Nic Tasker, is devoted to exploring the unorthodox side of club music. That, at least, is the impression you get from their records so far, which have come from artists like Minor Science, Reckonwrong and Kowton. Earlier this year, Whities hit a high note with a thumping and ecstatic techno EP from Avalon Emerson. For its follow up, Tasker turned to Josh Quirke, an artist previously seen on Young Turks (where Tasker used to work). In its soaring melodies and shoegazy haze, Whities 007 has a similar mood to Emerson's EP, but where that one galloped, this one crab-walks.
All three tracks offer something different, but they share a certain warped euphoria and nicely uneven textures and timbres. On the A-side we get "Cylinders," a melodic and seemingly improvised ambient number that swoops through the stereo field in wide arcs, and "Cope," a three-minute sketch that pulses and scrapes like a Porter Ricks production, its blissed chords flickering in and out as if from a faulty cable. "Sa45 Circles" is the club meat, but it's not exactly tailored for DJs. A dilapidated rhythm stumbles forth to the sound of wheezing valves and wet gurgles, while angelic chords coo overhead. It's as physical as it is abstract, sure to light up any DJ set weird enough to include it.
