Moscoman - Mexican Cola Bottle Baby

  • One of several impressive exports of Tel Aviv's dance music scene, the Berlin-based Moscoman makes club tools with the delicate potency of perfume. Threaded with lighthearted melodies and textural strokes, '80s new wave is a primary influence for the Israeli producer. But Moscoman's music, like that of his peers Red Axes and Autarkic, also absorbs more elusive sounds, which "Mexican Cola Bottle Baby" highlights. The track sounds like a warped field recording of a beach resort, with crisp percussion like cowbells, triangles and woodblocks. Needless to say, a track that conjures sand and surf as vividly as "Mexican Cola Bottle Baby" is an essential late-summer jam. Contributing a remix and an instrumental version, Peaking Lights don't drastically change the track, but they do give the music a dusky hue. The original's cheery whistle is dimmed, and the drums assert themselves more noticeably. Indra Dunis sings over her duo's remix, soaking her phrases with echo and reverb, careful not to overwhelm "Mexican Cola Bottle Baby" with anything heavier than the occasional word or two. Metallic percussive accents, including springs and hand drums that sound like bashed tin, fortify the original without weighing it down.
