Nathan Fake – Watlington Street EP

  • With the 19 year old Petter about to unleash his EP on Border Community, another young gun that is often linked with the Border Community sound by the name of Nathan Fake is also about to release his debut EP, this one on the very popular SAW Recordings out of the US. The Watlington Street EP features 5 of the very best Fake productions spread over two discs! First up is the very brilliant Ademage. The track is quite simply addictive and is in my opinion the best production Nathan has done. The beats and percussive elements are crisp, and the nature of the baseline is addictive, very addictive. The melodic tones compliment the rest of the elements so very well creating a stunning opening to the EP. On the flip is Bored of House. Raw, gritty and very dirty, this is Nathan Fake in a nutshell. Infectious baselines with an edge flow smoothly alongside quirky drum patterns and smooth atmospheric elements as well as cute bubbly melodies. The Second disc begins with Underberg on the a-side. I’ll say it early but this is a great track. Pounding is one word to describe it as it never lets up from the word go. Almost bordering on Danny Howells style techno, the track features some great drum patterns, acid riffs and a deep droning baseline that gives the production a solid framework. Some eerie vocal samples make their way into the track late on giving it another edge (not that it needed it!). Really good stuff here from Nathan and worth the disc two admission price alone. Overdraft is perhaps Nathan at his quirkiest as this almost full on drum and bass production features severely intense drum patterns, swirling synths and out of this world effects, all on top of a deep driving baseline. Head must have been elsewhere when he wrote this! Peary Land travels the full spectrum on one side of the vinyl as Nathan goes down tempo for the conclusion to this EP. Minimal beats intertwine with delightful melodies and lovely sound scapes. A very solid double EP this by the young gun. 3 solid club friendly tunes and 2 quirky numbers to close out proceedings!
