  • Mishaps Happening is the third Quantic LP featuring vocal collaborations from Soul/Funk legend Spanky Wilson, Sonny Akpan (Funkees) and long time affiliate Alice Russell. Quantic aka Will Holland, made the move from Natural Self to Tru Thoughts at 20 with three albums under his belt Will Holland continues to explore the depths of jazz, deep funk and afro blended tight breaks with his distinctive production techniques. Recording under alternate names his initial success formed from Quantic, also member of The Quantic Soul Orchestra, eleven piece live funk outfit and collective of highly talented musicians, The Quantic Soul Orchestra delves into depths of the early Seventies and dusty 7” records that have always been an inspiration to Will whom is an avid funk collector himself. One half of The Limp Twins a duo he formed with DJ partner Russ Porter had the two soon at it in the studio with Porter on the mic or decks and Will behind the desk doing his thing. Under the Quantic moniker Will released his first album The 5th Exotic in 2001, some of the most respected names in underground music like Richard Dorfmiester, Gilles Peterson and LTJ Bukem rated it exeptional, no wonder when tunes like "Common Knowledge" and classic "Life in the Rain" are spun across dance floors all over Europe. Shaking off the album is Mishaps Hapenings a worthy title track if I've ever heard one with a rolling bassline that goes on amidst cowbell clanks, waa waa guitar funking up the track and sax stabs throughout lasting for lengthy 7:32 mins, with well executed breaks and subtle vocal doo doo's. Break filled Drumming with huge percussive backup Use What You Got finds you nodding your head and tapping your feet to the sound of Sonny Kaplins ragga vocals and funk fuelled organ that hangs out making it's presence felt. Listening to the Jazz tip of Sound of Everything which features Alicia Russell's delicious vocals, engaging hi-hat accents, trumpet fills and high end organ twinkles step straight into a heavier percussive slant eight bars in adding hand clapping and some grooved piano accompaniment. Tables turned En Focus French hip hop artist Trinidad throws out the rhymes in his native tongue with a chorus of horn stabs and a shaking beat that has all the elements of a MC Solar style track. Organ in on Trees and Seas with some sampled effects and that familiar rolling beat, a pure instrumental tune for the listening, Same goes for the ambient Angels and Albertrosses a down tempo tune but distinctive to its own with filtered accompanied effects over syncopated drumming. Beat driven sounds is the main influence in the album both well received on the dancefloor or for you pleasure on the headphones as Furthest Moment a worthy 12" release if they do, drives on a faster paced dance orientated track.Leading into the funk fest of Don't Joke with a Hungary Man with Spanky "Soul" Wilson on the vocals doing it like it should be done. Supported by Memphis guitar, xylophone solo's, strung out strings and a huge tumbling double bass with funky as it comes drumming, brings it all out for this one. Back at it Spanky delivers again on When your Through filing it under funk, bringing in the horns, same distinctive drums and soul driven guitar with a shakedown chorus and echoed beat that "does it right" in Spanky's words. Having to stop myself short of writing an essay on this album im sure you get the gist that this is a fine release. With everything coming together for Quantic on this one, If you get a chance grab it off the shelf and add it to the collection.
