Alex Falk - Anjuna

  • Alex Falk has only released a few records, but all of them have been bold. Chunky and somewhat raunchy, the Tennessee producer makes the kind of house and techno that's helped draw attention to America's grassroots dance scenes. Falk has always kept it stateside, with releases on CGI Records, Finale Sessions and Proper Trax. He's back with Anjuna, a wacky, jacking 12-inch for New York's Mister Saturday Night. Anjuna uses Falk's signature sounds: stark rhythms, meaty kicks and powerful chopped-up vocals. He usually weaves these elements into colorful warehouse techno, but Anjuna has a breezy, daytime mood. "Love" and "Girl" are both floor-stompers, filled with a unique warmth—the former deploys thick, golden stabs, while the latter features vocals crooning "I miss you, girl." The title track is heavier, with an intense but meandering synth that stumbles over a crunchy beat. On "Yas," the kick is muffled to near silence, leaving white noise and a chanting voice to stew. Anjuna is strange, but this time Falk's eccentricity isn't so striking.
