Andeh Lang - Susskind

  • When he debuted on Will & Ink, Amsterdam's Andeh Lang joined a small label with a strong aesthetic. The producer's black label release from 2016 showcased a tougher, less quirky techno sound than that of label-mates Malin or Yaleesa Hall. His debut on the label proper doesn't mimic that duo's twitchy aesthetic, either. But its sparse rhythms, created with "custom made software and self-programmed audio algorithms," suggest Lang is developing idiosyncrasies of his own. We're eased into the sound with "First Susskind." Everything is understated in the extreme, from the muted, rolling low-end to the microscopic claps that flicker in and out of earshot. A sound somewhere between percussion and chord, meanwhile, sets off graceful ripples of delay. These elements solidify on "Second Susskind," the EP's most direct track, which motors along on a firm kick drum chassis. Its percussion weaves increasingly complex patterns across the stereo field, and a crinkle of distortion gives the sound a distinctive warm glow, verging on a shimmer in periodic climaxes. It and "Third Susskind" drone along at the same pitch, which makes for a seamless transition from one to the other. The latter allows this energy to unspool, lapsing hypnotically into nothing over eight-and-a-half minutes.
