JTH – Insular EP

  • Jonathan Hatfield has been around the musical scene for 4 years now and he looks set to make his biggest impression yet under his JTH production guise with his Insular EP. This is his first release with much more of his work already signed, and it is a great way to kick start a career let me tell you. First up is Cause/Effect and it’s a real highlight. A nice tech house stormer that is quite minimal for the first few moments with its crisp beats and sharp sounds, but as soon as the baseline hits its game over as this track really flows in a deep and devastating way. It’s chunky and meant for the floors! Something (4A) follows and a pattern is starting to emerge from Jonathan; that being he likes a good solid baseline. The beats get the ball rolling and not before long we are introduced to some more rumbling b-lines. The drum patterns surrounding may be minimal, but it’s the infectious grooves from the low end rumbles combined with the drums that make these tracks quite addictive! First up on the flip is He Said What?. Another chunky production, this track takes a different course then the a-side, using more electro and bleepy elements. Nice eerie effects make this quite another hot production, and the flow yet again is imply irresistible. Dark Fluid concludes this brilliant debut EP and as the name suggest it is the darkest production of the lot. Quite a tribal feel to it actually with crisp percussive elements for the first half, and it is not until the second half of the production, where we see a slow baseline give the track a deep evil groove. It is quite good to see a debut release by an artist making such a strong impression. It appears that Jonathan Hatfield is a name that will be on the decks of many DJ’s in the tech house circles. Check this out, you will not be disappointed.
