Kassem Mosse / Black Point - Split Vol. 2

  • Relaunched in 2015 after a decade-long hiatus, Jens "Lowtec" Kuhn's Out To Lunch label keeps its original aim of releasing material from those on the fringes. Its latest is the second in a series of three split releases. It pitches Black Point, who first released on the label in 2015, up against the more seasoned Kassem Mosse. The latter leads with "MPCDEEPLIVEDIT," a choppy sub-110 BPM production probably recorded on the fly. It's a lot more accessible than the cerebral knottiness of his recent LP, Disclosure. (You might recognise it from the mix accompanying Workshop's recent label of the month feature.) Something about the track's plucked disco bass sits awkwardly when heard through headphones, but the simmering tension of its four-note synth refrain grabs you when it washes over a room. You're likely to be seduced by Black Point's "Forest Lore" in any situation. It's one of those genre-less productions Jens Kuhn adores, evoking vintage jungle, spangled footwork and downtempo house at once. The way Black Point shifts the focus between various elements—yearning synths, distant vocals, alien keys—highlights the track's rich detail.
