And.rea - Less Talking More Walking

  • And.rea's Perception Of Objective Reality double pack on Melliflow was an impressive debut for a young artist. Hovering at the crossroads of tech house, electro, bleep and UK garage currently driving parts of the minimal scene, it prioritised groove over the weirdness that weighs down some of his contemporaries. It showcased multiple aspects of And.rea's sound, so Less Talking More Walking might not be an essential purchase if you bought Perception Of Objective Reality. But it's still a strong and infectious 12-inch with highlights that match the best moments of the first release. "Theoretically" is good-natured, matching cheeky synths with a knobby bassline and effortlessly skipping drums. Like past tracks "Microcosm" and "Low Connection," it asserts And.rea's knack for on-point combinations of drums and bass. "Dream Catcher" uses similar synth chords but is slinkier, straighter and subtler, touching on shades of bleep and early techno without feeling cluttered. "Random Continuity" is the EP's most relaxed track. Its drums take a back seat to foreground a set of pretty bleeps masked in smudged chords, as various lead lines enter and exit without asserting themselves. The track is difficult to fault, but it doesn't catch the ear like the closer, "Into A Liquid Broken Space," where shuffling drums clatter and twitch with a loose-limbed UK garage flex. Filter zaps and curious chords help build a moody yet playful vibe, but like all of And.rea's best tunes, its bass and drums do the most damage.
