everglade - Bodies In Trouble

  • According to its Bandcamp page, Zoology Records is a netlabel for "electronic future ghetto ambient" music. It's an online refuge for artists dabbling in bright colours and diverse club styles. Some of the artists are real people, others are pseudonyms used by two of the label's three founders. André Luyten, who's one of them, has released tropical house tracks under the name everglade. It's been harmlessly cheesy and retro-sounding so far—the sort of tracks you'd stick on at a house party to loosen up the room. Bodies In Trouble is different. It's still pleasantly pastel, but the tone has shifted to something more highbrow. The EP takes on generative music, a term popularised by Brian Eno in the mid-'90s. It ripples, burbles and flows like a sparkling digital river. Bodies In Trouble clamours for your attention, especially "POWr act," which is stacked with noisy mimics of water. The track also has Eastern influences, like it's a computer version of a Japanese water garden that's too bustling to relax in. "neriticPlastic" warrants an even closer inspection. While Bodies In Trouble might not be ever changing, repeat listens are required to unmask this mercurial gem.
