  • Sunday is usually the day of God, the day of rest, the day of peace. Yet in the land of Ibiza on June 20 this year, I was baptised into a religion like no other, at the ‘We Love Sundays’ opening party. I arrived in Ibiza in the wee hours of Friday morning, geared up like no other for my week ahead. But the opening at Space was definitely the most talked about highlight of the trip and my absolute definite focus. I was determined to remain ‘well-behaved’ as such until the glorious day arrived that I could finally see the club I had heard so much about. Arriving at the legendary Space at 4pm, I was quite surprised to find it seemed relatively quiet on the outside (none of it’s infamous queues) and I had absolutely no hassle getting in. Though the outside face of the club couldn’t have been more deceiving. I walked in to find at least 1000 people already going off to the banging tunes of some of the local residents, the gorgeous day shaded by the club’s gynormous roof, the club steadily enjoying an influx of seriously sunny-faced clubebrs ready to party. It was surprisingly a very cosmopolitan crowd that day at Space, with many different types of clubbers of all ages representing a colourful bunch of nationalities. I found a large number of British, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and American at the club, then occasionally running to Aussie expat from Sydney, which was a nice surprise and absolutely not-expected. Many of the clubbers are glammed up to the max, but there were also a hell of a lot of hippies, cyberkids and then of course the more casually dressed. I've never seen a more varied crowd at a club, and despite this unique mix of people, the atmosphere was terrific throughout my whole day there. The quality tunes pumped out of the huge strategically placed speakers all day long. The atmosphere of the Terrace was enhanced in a way like no other by dj’s such as Jason Bye, David Phillips, Tayo & Tope together, rocking the house, and finally my own personal highlight Steve Lawler. I missed out on supporting our Sydney-adopted talent Mr Bye, but did however arrive in time for the rest. Tayo & Frank Tope took their show-stopping anarcho-house tag team talents and delivered deep, chunky, funky beats which the crowd just couldn’t get enough of. I realised Steve Lawler’s set was definitely one that not only I had been anticipating, as the crowd erupted immediately on his appearance. At that point it all becomes a bit of a musical daze really: I had entered the land of Lawler’s funky tribal beats and lost myself like everyone around me on the sweaty dance floor. I moved and grooved and shaked my ‘thang’, the beats reminiscent of my days with friends at Together @ Home. Eric Morillo jumped in on Lawler’s set at one point as well, and the quality of the tunes was almost overwhelming. But as you all know all good things come to an end, and as the clock struck midnight I actually did manage to lose one of my blessed Havana-slippers, and aghast, it was over !! Why in the hell did we arrive so late?! How in the hell were our wallets empty already!?!? (NB: Word to the wise: save three times the amount you think you will need in Ibiza, especially for clubs like Space…. Six euro per bottle of water, etc, and make sure you have the cash on you. There are no ATM’s inside, no pass-outs and credit cards aren’t accepted without your passport, which to bring to a party like that you would have to be an awfully silly-sausage!). All in all, it was quite the amazing day, and if you ever get to Europe, Ibiza in the summertime is definitely worth a visit, if not only for ‘We Love Sundays@ Space. I know that I will be returning later this season for the closing parties, so how about it then??!
