Fracture - Cold & Rain

  • Charlie Fieber's "Cold & Rain" is a piece of sickly sweet confectionery. And if the UK producer's latest single is candy, then it's Pop Rocks, exploding and fizzing whenever the drums drop. It's a bubbly take on modern drum & bass, packing all kinds of drum sounds—even ticking trap hi-hats—into a breakneck template. There's a sense of mischief to "Cold & Rain" that's mirrored by the bump-and-flex of "Your Time," which mixes 2-step-inspired basslines with rocketing Reeses and percussion that flies off the rails. Fieber, an early pioneer of drum & bass's footwork-inspired slow/fast movement—also championed by Sam Binga, Sinistarr and Moresounds—makes tunes that feel like the smoothest whiplash you'll ever experience. "On My Mind" is like a Hospital Records version of the slow/fast sound, zooming between its passages with an exaggerated energy. The Alix Perez collaboration, "So High," is just as cartoonish, with an ultra-pitched-up vocal, frantic drums and fat basslines. Every track on Cold & Rain feels built for instant gratification.
