Lone - Ambivert Tools Volume Two

  • Lone began a new EP series for R&S called Ambivert Tools in April. As Matt Unicomb noted about Volume One, the "tunes are tough, with bulldozing percussion that kicks harder than the subtler elements they're paired with." Volume Two is also aimed at the dance floor but it goes easier on the drums. The charm lies in those subtler elements: gentle pads, fluttering melodies, silvery chimes. "Looking Glass" is the clearest bridge back to the EP's predecessor, with a thumping beat and grunts that yell "pump!" But where vocals drove the energy on Volume One, here they're faint flashes across the glimmering surface. On the other two cuts, glowing atmospheres take the lead. "A Mind's Eye Melody" is a warm and transient groover, starting with breezy hand drums before layering on soul-soothing arps. "Under Cherry Blossoms (Mind's Eye Reprise)" is beatless, putting the attention on a delicate build-up of sparkling loops that evokes the first moments of dawn.
