Jack Roland - The Others

  • Dream Technology was a fitting title for Jack Roland's debut EP, released earlier in the year through UN.T.O., AKA the Milanese label UNintelligent Trax Outsourcing. Like A Sagittariun's dreamscapes of UK dance floors past and present, the Amsterdam producer smeared breakbeat, electro, house and '90s techno into moody cuts. Though his follow up for the fledgling Lonely Planets Rec. label is more stylistically streamlined—it's a spacey electro EP of stellar proportions—the dreamy surface of its predecessor has been magnified to make it all the more compelling. The piercing synths in the title track's opening bars cut to the chase. Then there's the wrenchingly melancholic pads that cocoon the jittering electro core. Throughout The Others these atmospheres are the dominant force, so the dance floor is always subservient to the trip. Shimmering melodies mingle luxuriously with breathy vocal clips on "Lost," while "Kyi City" shudders with crystal details. "Solar Panels" adopts a tougher techno stance, before "Porta 1" rounds things off in a drawn-out balmy haze. Stargazing with Jack Roland is time well spent.
