Invisible Church & Marie Davidson - Whatever Makes You Feel Safe

  • Marie Davidson is on top of her game. Besides touring like crazy and fine-tuning her exceptional live show—part chanteuse pop, part slamming techno—she's been involved in a variety of collaborations. There's her "suburban techno" project, SLEAZY, with fellow Canadian Ginger Breaker. She's also lent her voice (and cheeky personality) to tracks for Solitary Dancer, DETOBEAT. and Not Waving. Now lands Whatever Makes You Feel Safe, an oppressive three-track EP with Alex Zhuk, AKA Invisible Church, a fellow graduate of last year's RBMA in Montreal. A dank and stifling atmosphere reigns throughout Whatever Makes You Feel Safe, a grim record set to put you on edge. Davidson's voice appears on "Collage" in spectral form as ominous sounds surge in the background. She speaks in fragments in "Never Release The Tension," her voice heavily reverbed as though recorded in a vault deep underground. A masterpiece of repressed violence, "Ten Years" keeps the intensity soaring over ten swollen minutes. Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a wonderfully dangerous record.
