- Adana Twins hail from Hamburg. Until recently, this was heard in their swaggering deep house, which can be filed next to fellow Hamburgers and Diynamic labelmates Stimming, David August, and H.O.S.H. In 2015 they began shifting towards heavier fare with "Heroe," its vocal offset with squelchy, ominous bass, rattling synths and a noticeable absence of sultry house chords. Their 2017 Flower Of Cane EP continued in that vein, while "Uncompromising," released on Diynamic's Four To The Floor compilation a year ago, was as its title suggested, building tension incrementally in dark, eyes-down fashion.
Their Jupiter EP is cut from the same cloth. The title track simmers with an unrelenting pulse, brassy synth stabs and a restrained drop. Consider it a warm up for what follows. "Sequence 01" signposts its heft early with a quickened bassline taken over by warped, flutey synths that scale up and down with increasing urgency. A ghostly choir adds to the menace before drums lead into the main drop, punctuated with the hiss of dry ice. It's little wonder the track caught the attention of Tale Of Us, who included it on their fabric 97 mix. You can imagine them playing "Jupiter," too, and herein lies a problem. Along with "Uncompromising," there's an Afterlife-ready sameyness to the EP. Weapons like these are best deployed sparingly to preserve full impact.
