Gian - LACK 015

  • Gian's apocalyptic tendencies were toned down on his last release, a collaboration with the house head Massimiliano Pagliara. Back for a solo EP, the Berlin producer is free to return to the ash-choked slopes explored on his debut for LACKRec. in 2016. LACK 015 narrows his focus, sidelining the '90s-indebted techno found on that record's A-side in favour of the classically minded electro found on the B-side. He's also nudged the tempo locus into the mid-130s (he previously preferred the eyeball-melting 140s). The music hasn't lost its noxious intensity, though, nor the slickness and directness that is becoming Gian's trademark. "Purple Burglar" is satisfying. It has the malevolent sputtering 303, the roiling low-end and a spine-chilling tritone melody. A charcoal smog of reverb nicely completes the nuclear fallout vibe. On "Echoflex" the air clears out and the portentous melodies are sat lower in the mix, allowing a few shreds of electroid funk to float into view. On the "Fleeb Mixx" of "Subdimensional Drift," pensive pads and a hypnotic longform structure make for the record's wind-down moment.
