Clay Wilson - Osho

  • One of the coolest things about flipping through old records is finding the connections that begin to emerge through the labels, addresses, remixers, vocalists and producers printed on jackets and center stickers. Illustrious epochs in dance music unfold through these names. Osho, the third release on The Bunker New York from Clay Wilson, documents the sounds and associations driving an influential cross-section of dance music in 2018. Wilson, a low-key member of The Bunker squad, has put out some memorable tracks—"Socorro," "Skandha"—that fit the label's predilection towards psychedelic machine funk. "Osho" falls in lockstep, taking elements of techno, acid and electro without neatly fitting into any of those categories. The remixes reflect the bond between The Bunker and Interdimensional Transmissions. Derek Plaslaiko, a steadfast resident DJ at The Bunker and the IT crew's No Way Back party, further develops his studio nous with a reserved electro-leaning version. The other remixer, Jason Loveland, has released EPs on IT's Acid Series and the Acid Camp label, which makes it clear where he's coming from. His "Twisted Interpretation" remix might be his best work yet, a dramatic acid cut that looks back on the sound's transition from '80s Chicago to '90s rave. The Bunker's new recruit, Rrao, adds murky atmospherics and spoken-word samples on her remix, rounding out a workmanlike 12-inch that captures the sound of a crew that's shaping the present by looking to the past.
