Twisted techno for twisted minds.
SHXCXCHCXSH - SHULULULU
The notion that hypnotic techno needs to be repetitive is contradicted by records like SHXCXCHCXSH's SHULULULU. A black hole of synth tones, ambient sounds and tape hiss, it's the latest in a stellar run of EPs from Avian, a label that's found the sweet spot between techno, ambient and experimental. Much like recent efforts from Reeko and Desroi, SHULULULU isn't focussed on what works in a DJ set. In fact, the best setting could be a twisted afterhours at home, where everyone's mind is swimming in paranoid thoughts, still dazed from the night before
The most powerful track, "SHULULULU," is also the longest. Eight minutes of fizzing synths and syncopated beats, it's intense but vaguely angelic, the energy building as different tones come and go. The shorter tracks are harsher, bubbling with white noise and murkier atmospheres. "SHUNUNUNU" packs the EP's heaviest kick drum, while a shard of piercing white noise shreds through the cascade of bleeps at "SHUBUBUBU"'s core. SHULULULU is a powerful EP with a sound too abstract for most techno DJs.
