  • Here's a new techno artist to keep tabs on. ADLAS is a Berlin-based DJ and producer who's been active on the city's club scene these past few years. He co-runs a party called Krach at popular Berlin venues like Suicide Circus, Griessmuehle and ://about blank, and judging by some of its bookings—J. Tijn, Alienata, Laksa, Umwelt—and the two DJ mixes on his SoundCloud page, he most enjoys techno with non-standard rhythms. Arrival By Air, his debut release, furthers this theory. It arrives on the eponymous label of Answer Code Request, an artist known for respectfully breaking techno's rhythmic conventions. The two producers also share a penchant for shimmering melodies, which ADLAS uses liberally to counterbalance the intensity of his tricky drum patterns. The synths on three of Arrival By Air's four tracks have an elegant E-rush kind of vibe, although the character of the beats is different on each. The title track is powered by a broken beat that would sound at home on Ilian Tape. "Celestial Mechanics" has hints of Bristol in its stepping rhythm, while "Search Signal" features an intricate four-on-the-floor pattern that Answer Code Request would be proud of. The closer, "Tidal Lock," is an outlier and the record's most unique offering. The mood is more difficult to place, which might be due to the peculiar drum programming and sound design. That it maintains dance floor potency is this new producer's biggest achievement here.
