Space Ibiza Closing Party - 03/10/04

  • Unbelievable! Summer's come and gone – in what I felt was a flash! Days are going to be unbearably shorter and colder. But before winter sets in proper, there's still the plethora of closing parties in Ibiza to mark the end of the mad season. Even with so many events going on, there's no doubt that Space's closing is one not to be missed. Reaching Space at just after 4pm, there was already people milling about everywhere. As I waited for my turn to enter, I could hear music booming out of the Terraza and loud cheers erupting here and there. I smiled to myself. I could sense and feel the excitement and anticipation all around. Marvellous! And it was nice to be able to wear skimpy clothes and flip flops and not to worry about carrying a jacket with me. We walked right to the back of the car park where the DJ Mag arena was situated amongst white canopied tents. There, we found Smokin Jo playing an excellent mixture of uplifting tech-house tunes peppered with happy and airy vocals – setting the right tone for end of the summer season where people just wanted to dance with their arms up in the air and smiling happily at one another. I ran into some mates and then made my way inside the club. I quickly bypassed the Discoteca. The interior was too dark and the music too hard for me to digest then. I managed to squeeze my way into the Terraza but stayed only for a few minutes. The vibes were wonderful there, people were yelling at every breakdown, arms punching the air -- but the room was way too crowded for my liking. I couldn't move, it was too hot and after hearing three massive tunes in a row, I decided to go back outside. Villeneuve was just taking over. This upcoming DJ is fast becoming one of my favourites. We unanimously felt his flawless Balearic set was the best at the closing party! He whacked brilliant tribal house tunes, fun and light one moment, and bordering on progressive at the next. My mates and I danced and swayed. He wowed us with sexy vocals and impressed us with some of the dirtiest tunes we'd heard throughout the party. He kept us riveted on the dance floor and everyone shouted at Deep Dish's Flashdance. The wind blew a gentle breeze, fantastic music playing, like minded people around, the happy vibes, excellent energy, what else could I ask for? Soon it was Digweed's turn behind the decks. He kept the mood going with similar uptempo tracks, befitting what we were feeling. The highlight for me was when he played Futureshock's atmospheric remix of Underworld's Jumbo at the exact moment when mini fireworks and sparkles were released from the podiums situated in the arena. As I watched the flares from the warm embrace of a special friend with Karl Hyde's mesmerising vocals in the background, I almost cried at the intensity of emotions I felt inside. It was an amazing moment. I could see people hugging one another, no one wanted summer with its magical charm to end. That moment's etched in my mind forever. Digweed soon moved to tracks with tougher basslines as the sun set. Carl Cox came on after Digweed. After that, everything passed quickly in blur bits for me. I remembered dancing to his set before checking out the new Red Room inside. I saw Danny Tenaglia horsing around there. I recalled attempting to hear Erick Morillo playing in the Terraza. I vaguely had the notion of singing to Tainted Love. I must've walked back out and found my friend who must've dragged me back into the dark interior of the Discoteca for I was jumping to the aggressive sounds of serious banging music! Me!! Apparently I was moving non stop to John Digweed and Carl Cox's full on progressive house and rapid techno back-to-back sets. It has to be another me! But there you go, Space's closing was one mega full on party! My only grouse was that Space is charging an awful lot for drinks. IT'S DAY LIGHT ROBBERY and IT'S NOT FUNNY to pay 17 Euros for a drink! Come on people, you're already charging an expensive door entry! Be Reasonable!
