  • In Theory is steeped in deep thinking. Isomov, a New York-based artist, says the release began as an attempt to explore the perspective of a fictional supercomputer from The Last Question, a short story by the US science fiction author Isaac Asimov. You might expect such a mind-bending approach to yield cerebral results, but as the project evolved, Isomov began to fold their own online experiences into the concept. The resulting club music is spiky, even furious. It's certainly at home on Decisions Records, the Australian label cofounded by Air Max '97, but it's also imbued with shimmering melancholy. "Origin, Emergence, And The One," the opening track, greets us with a distorted, cyborg-sounding scrawl. New age-like synths synths bubble and swirl until a brittle dancehall beat emerges. Splintering snares add swing and movement, but the star is the bittersweet vocal, recalling the sweeping choral sections of the 1995 Ghost In The Shell soundtrack. The haunting refrain loops over and over, casting a sorrowful atmosphere over Isomov's futuristic soundscape.
