  • Cutting his teeth as a DJ in the '90s, Chicago's Boo Williams has been making classics for more than 20 years. His first cuts were pressed during the height of an evolving deep house sound led by the style's pioneer, Larry Heard. These early tracks were inspired by the melody-focused "deep sound" of this second wave of house. (See, for example, the soaring ambiance on his '90s classic "Mortal Trance.") Since this early heyday, Williams has remained consistent in putting out a steady stream of sublime house. His recent release, "Outer Limits," proves no different. For a producer who roots his work in classic sounds, "Outer Limits" is pleasantly relevant. The track shows Williams' unmatched focus, levelling meticulous arrangement and refreshing simplicity into a seven-minute, light-hearted groove. The introductory melody sounds like an elaboration of the bubbling, undulating synths from 2017's "The Place Of Safety," though here it remains vibrant at the foreground. Then there's precise percussion, followed by rich piano chords and a sneaky acid bassline that filters in and out of the first half. Like the best of Boo Williams, this is the kind of tune you want to experience through the finest soundsystem, so you don't miss any details.
