Chocolate Fireguard present Interesting Flavours

  • If you’ve not yet entered the world of Chocolate Fireguard then this collection offers you the perfect opportunity to do so. It serves a double purpose for the Yorkshire boys, promoting their established acts Kava Kava and The Bluefoot Project, whilst allowing plenty of room for hard to find tracks from Bentley Rhythm Ace and Freddy Fresh. Fresh contributes two excellent tracks in ‘The Real Pro’ and especially ‘The Salesman’, a collection of quirky samples and an insistent string loop. The Bentley track, ‘Loop Of Love’, is predictably breezy in the way only they know, and it’s followed by a decent Boyz From The Hudd remix of Kava Kava’s ‘Bank Job’. Their earlier ‘Tic’, however, is less effective. The Bluefoot Project’s ‘Little Miss Foolish’ gives us a chance to hear the belting voice of Rachel Modest, who soars above some fine remix trickery handed out by the Awayteam. Later on, ‘Try’ provides a tempter for their well received album of last year. Elsewhere it’s good to hear some lesser known acts. Speedwell’s ‘Red Light Go’ is strangely compelling, the kind of track that on first listen doesn’t seem to offer much but stands out as good quality. Ca (La Cedille) offer a beguiling track in ‘Sous Titre’, and some soft female vocals go over and out for the Practical Headz ‘Smooth Vibe’. It’s clear a lot of care and thought has gone into this collection of tracks, well planned and musically extremely varied. If you want something different and stimulating for late night listening try some of Interesting Flavours – it will reward many a repeat hearing.
