Sote - Parallel Persia Remixes

  • Mark Fell and Rashad Becker take on the Iranian experimentalist's music.

  • Last year's Parallel Persia pulverized traditional Persian instrumentation into otherworldly sounds. It was one of the crown jewels in a lifetime of musical experimentation from the Iranian artist Sote, who has a grasp of sound design and manipulation equaled by few. Rashad Becker's "Dramatic Reenactment" of "Pseudo Scholastic" has more steady rhythms than his solo albums, but it's every bit as mind-bending. Becker moves through distinct movements of bent sound playing out eerie melodies that move easily between tonal and non-tonal keys. And then there's Mark Fell's 20-minute "Parallel Yorkshire" edit of "Modality Transporter," which is the most inspiring thing he's done in years. The sound palette is simple but blindsiding, and it moves within hard-to-pin-down spirals that feel much funkier than usual. Throw in another great track from Sote, "Artificial Neutrality," and you've got a remix EP that almost surpasses the hefty record it's based on.
