AceMoMa - EP2

  • A perfectly crafted release that references '90s drum & bass and classic Detroit techno.

  • MoMa Ready and AceMo nail the fundamentals of dance music. Take "Baby Crazy," the lead track off their new collaborative EP. On paper, it's a blazing jungle beat, a frenzied diva sample and the occasional keyboard note. But then listen to how they chop the vocal; the track suddenly becomes a hectic club tune. EP2 makes a fine follow-up to A New Dawn, the duo's debut, with the same mix of scuffed textures, irrepressible melodies and technical touches. The broken beat on "Legend Of The African Samurai" is thrillingly unpredictable. "Dream Dancer" is a classic bit of organ house, with the lead melody so buried underneath grit that it sounds like the keyboard coughed it up during its last gasps of life. The final track on EP2 is an 11-minute AceMoMA dub of "Time 2 Dance," a solo AceMo track that dates back to 2017. There's a hypnotic calm to both its repetition and its haziness that reminds me of classic STL tracks like "Silent State," the kind of house music you never want to end. There's a certain kind of patience and skill it takes to accomplish that kind of pared-down perfection, an understanding of dance music that comes naturally to these two.
