  • On its latest release, Dego's 2000black label continues its mission of fusing the musical strands of the African Diaspora into a coherent and fulfilling audible experience. Figuring It Out is the debut EP from singer-songwriter Samii, who previously appeared on Dego's 2019 album, Too Much. Electronic music has always had a dubious relationship with vocal tracks. It's refreshing to hear a release that not only has great production from a musician of Dego's caliber, but substantive lyrics as well. Samii's words are not afterthoughts slapped over tracks. These are fully realized songs. "Wake Me Up" and "Spaced Out Summer Tours & Back Again" share an R&B vibe that is prevalent in a lot of the jazz-influenced music recently coming out of the UK. Both pieces are driven by melodic keys and funky synth lines, with ample room for the vocals to shine through. On the other, more dance floor-ready tracks, Samii shows us her versatility without overreaching. A taste of disco can be heard in "Here To Luv Myself." "For Too Long" has a heavier emphasis on bass and percussion, creating an enveloping groove. Once again her vocals glide in and around the beat, bringing an organic feel to the forefront. This is a strong introduction to Samii. Certainly one to keep an eye on.
