Sepehr - Crown Jewel

  • A striking EP of techno, electro and coldwave fusions.

  • Sepehr released his excellent debut album Shaytoon—farsi for "little devil"—earlier this year on Dark Entries. Now he's taking that name for a label of his own, a platform to explore his dual Iranian-American heritage and what he sees as an underrated Iranian electronic scene. The first EP, Crown Jewel, draws from both the coldwave-inspired aesthetics of his album and the spiky electro he made before. In the process, it touches on what could be a signature sound: sleek, retro and a little unsettling. Crown Jewel begins ominously with the lumbering "Cloak Of Flames" before hopscotching from lead-footed techno ("Night Is Young") to slamming, electro-flavored rhythms ("Riposte"). Sepehr's deadpan vocals appear on "Head To The Sky" and "Night Is Young," echoing the '80s-inspired vibe of Shaytoon. Squelchy 303 basslines abound, adding a physical, sweat-slicked feel to tracks like "Crown Jewel."
