  • Established music distribution company Inertia has now expanded to become a full blown recording company, specialising in releasing quality electronic music releases and pushing forth local Australian and NZ artists. Inertia have enlisted the talents of Perth's drum'n'bass don Greg Packer to compile and mix Soul Fuel, the label's first mix CD featuring some of the biggest tunes to hit in 2004 from artists such as High Contrast, Nu:Tone, XRS alongside tunes from Greg himself. Lifted straight from his sophomore album, High Contrast's Twilight's Last Gleaming sets the uplfting tone for the CD with it's funky horn section riff, soulful diva style vocals and rolling breaks. One of 2004's biggest and most memorable drum'n'bass anthems has got to be Nu:Tone's remix of Lenny Fontana presents Black Sun's Spread Love. The tune oozes heartwarming soulful vocals that deliver messages of peace, love and goodwill - definitely an anthem for today's world. Add to that a catchy bassline melody, funky guitar lick and gospel vocal backups and you've got a drum'n'bass anthem which will last for ages. Soul Drop vs Greg Packer continue the feelgood vibes with the summery beats of Hawaiian Groove. As the name suggests the tunes incorporates a Hawaiian guitar riff, Carribean percussion, latin horns and vocal shouts from MC Shureshock. The mix of cultures (Pacific, Carribean, Latin and hip hop) all melded into one make this a standout tune. Faith In Me by John B rinses out thick rolling beats and bass combined with a catchy female vocal hook (with plenty of singalong factor!) all topped off with buildups and hoovers powerful enough to raise even the laziest of arms. Greg Packer then gets into a medley of five of his own productions, starting with the funky Wonderful Revisited featuring the vocal stylings of MC Shureshock then leading into ragga drum'n'bass with Ragga Ninja with ragga style toasting courtesy of MC Assassin. Shureshock too has a turn at ragga MCing on Dancehall Theme with dancehall effects, sirens all sounding off in the background. The mix then comes to a close with a selection of Greg's remixes including Hurt No More by Laroque feat Angie Brown - an old skool house classes which Greg has updated for today's dancefloor by fusing together elements of jazz, a funky bass hook and house flavoured vocals. Greg Packer & Rachel Claudio's Something Inside sends the mix on it's way home providing a contrast between funky vibes and dark, heavy bass while Rachel lets loose with her diva vocal stylings. Greg Packer shows that he can mix it up and produce with the best of them on Soul Fuel. It's a very energetic mix of drum'n'bass tunes loaded with musicality - catchy melodic hooks that get stuck in your head and leave you singing for ages even after the CD has stopped playing.
