Gavin Keitel - Electric Volume 1

  • EQ Recordings unleash their latest series that is sure to follow on from the success of their much lauded Balance series. The new series is Electric, and it gets set to unearth the more techy and cutting edge electro sounds that surround us today, and to unleash the series the EQ crew have looked close to home to Melbourne based DJ Gavin Keitel. Internationally, Gavin might be a relatively unknown DJ, but let me assure you that in the thriving wealth of talent that is the Melbourne scene, Gavin ranks as one of the most professional, and this mix should paint a good picture as to why that is so. The mix begins quite nicely with a lot of moody behaviour. ‘Six’ by Inaqui Marin sets the mix up nicely with some crisp beats and a smooth set of baselines. The Tiefscwarz mix of ‘Pride’ is a smooth yet gritty track that builds the mix much like the dirty Tiga mix of Drama Society. Robert Babicz unleashes a filthy tech cut that is a genuine highlight in the mix as is the Egoexpress mix of Einmusik. The mix is at a good stage here as Gavin unleashes some solid productions that build and work together very well. Hugg & Pepp unleash a stunning moment in ‘Snabeln’, a track full of electro baselines and stunning string patterns. ‘Stay With Me’ is smooth and minimal yet strangely addictive while the ‘City Lights’ of Double X turn the heat up on the mix just a touch with some smooth pads and twirling melodies. The mix starts to get a little more twisted with the Dirt Crew Solid Diamond Mix of ‘Soul Sounds’, a track that twists and turns throughout and slowly meets the smooth and moody sounds of DJ T’s ‘Rising’. Dirk Leyers takes the mix down an even moodier path with the intricate sounds of ‘New Serious One’, and Broker / Dealer’s ‘Boots & Pants’ is a beautiful and emotive record that acts as a brilliant penultimate track in the mix. Superpitcher is charged with providing the finale to this quality mix and he does so in style with his Original mix of ‘Happiness’. It seems as if the crew at Balance can’t put a foot wrong when it comes to compilations. The Balance series hit a good high when Fortier mixed their last outing, and this new series looks set to be just as promising as the Balance series. Much like the Balance series, the first mix was handed to a Melbourne DJ who did the label proud, and Gavin Keitel has done just that by giving this series the kick start it needed with an emotive and cutting edge mix that will surprise many of you, and leave some of the big name mixes that are out now looking quite ordinary.
