Sylvia Tosun - Sleepless

  • First releases are always difficult. What should the world see and hear from the label? What’s the vibe, the personality, and the attitude that will ooze out of each single? For Lance Jordan and his newly founded Dusk Recordings, he finds his inspiration with Sylvia Tosun’s Sleepless. Taking the original elements, Jordan (Mix) spreads out the beats and teases Tosun’s vocals towards seductive levels. As a pulsing bassline rides low, flowing quietly, tribal percussions will peak, developing a cascading wall for Tosun’s vocals to shine. Obviously, it’s her voice that will draw your attention and Jordan understands it, making the track very listenable in the club or inside your stereo. There certainly is a commercial appeal in the mix as he tries to expand the possibilities of having not just a club hit, but a radio monster in the waiting. Kicking the beats deeper, stronger, and heavier, Jordan’s Dub takes the usual New York House sounds, and who really blames him? The synths have become more apparent now without Tosun, except for the fact that she still creeps in for a single word, a line, as it sounds as though she’s begging for more attention from the crowd. It’s good, but the Dub feels as though it’s missing something. Maybe it’s the fact that there’s less progression in the sounds, or that you still can’t let go of Tosun’s voice, however, you walk away thinking it sound have been better than what it is. The final remix comes from one of Jordan’s students’, a possible up and comer Martin Corona. Taking the alias of A.M Corona, his mix gives the single diversity. Where the first two dive deeper in the realm of house music, Corona searches for stars in a trancier fashion. Not bad, though it feels too rushed. The vocals are stretched, making it sound secondary to the music, and that shouldn’t be the case. However, those who like their music more uplifting will find something to enjoy with Corona’s variation.
