Toasted's First Birthday

  • It had been a year since I had gone to my very first Toasted party. Since the first one, they have really gone from strength to strength, expanding line-up’s and each time just doing that little bit extra. So I was interested to see what treats they had for their first birthday. The night started with some problems. One of the decks in the main room was not working properly. And it was about an hour before this was remedied. But this gave me a chance to catch nearly all of Gav Fisher’s set, who was playing in the room next to the bar. He started the night off really well. Seeing that people were still just sitting around talking he played a lot of laid back, and funky house. He moved on to something a little more substantial as the place started to fill up and more people started dancing. My favourite track from his set was a Mr. C. track from the London’s Calling EP. Ajax is a DJ that also seems to impress me, and so I was keen to catch all of his set. His set spanned many styles, from breaks to tech-house to electro and dabs of anything in between. Some tracks/records that I recognised: Medicine “Ape Dont Call Ape EP” A Wally Lopez and Dr Kucho Track Little Computer People Remixes 2 Soul of Man tracks A remix of “Tear the Club Up” He then ended his sets with my track s of the night, if only I could remember the name. It was a breaks track that had this real 80’s/ectro feel to it. Layer over were these little synth stabs and a sweeping melody. Pure brilliance. All I know is it is on Muller records out of Germany. This is probably the best set that I have seen Ajax play. The guy is a real talent. After Ajax I was torn between seeing Cuz and Jay Walker. I managed to see parts of both the sets. Jay Walker started off with some really tough breaks. His second track was something on the Marine Parade label and is one of the best breaks tracks I have heard in a very long time. His whole set consisted of strong bassline’s and massive kicks, with a bit of scratching thrown in for good effect. In the other room at the same time was Cuz. Last time he had really stood out, and he proved he wasn’t a one hit wonder. Playing couky house, moving on to funkier stuff, as well as some nice deep house. Over a lot of his records he had a live saxophone player, which the crowd seemed to respond really well to. His energy behind the decks also did wonders to get the room buzzing. Next up in the main room was Luke Glenday. Luke at the last party had played a breaks set, but on this occasion he played more of a tech-house set. But he still threw down some amazing breaks tunes that the crowd just ate up. He started his set with FC Kahuna’s “Glitterball”, and shortly after played “Patricia never leaves the house”, a remix of Missy Elliots “Get Ya Freak on” as well as “Tear the Fucking Club Up”. Next up was Pocket, one of the most talent producers that Australia has to offer. But on this occasion, rather than playing live, he was playing a DJ set. He started off with Bushwacka!’s “The Egyptian”, and followed this up with John Creamer and Stephane K’s “I Love You” (Hybrid’s Claustrophobic remix). He played quite tough tech-house, really picking up the pace from where Luke left off. His best track of the night was actually one of his own production works. It was a new track he has been working on and it was mind-blowing. By this time it was around about 4 o’clock and I was totally destroyed. I had to call it a night for fear of my legs falling off. As per usual a great night, even if it did end a little early for me.
