Odissi - Groupie

  • Following on from Tearsmasher/Meltdown, her previous release on Cyberfunk, Odissi returns to the label with Groupie presenting a new sound for the label at the same time! Usually known for their darker take on tear out breaks, Groupie leans toward electro infused with a gritty punk ethic and provides a backdrop for Odissi's rant toward all the fake groupie girls who want to be seen around all the DJs (my kind of women!). On remix duties they've enlisted the talents of Vandal whose known for his releases on his Plastic Raygun label and of course, his 'Mad As Hell' on Meat Katie's Lot49 imprint. Side A. Vandal Remix Vandal's remix follows directly on from his Mad As Hell release dropping a housey beat with very punchy snares, clean hi-hats and soul claps. Vandal takes the original bassline and varies it slightly to give it a new melody and is accompanied by slightly off-key acid stabs. Odissi's vocals are carved down to a less-offensive version with "Hey You! Big Star" being the only 4 words salvaged. Vandal then drops in sci-fi stabs ad nausea and plays around with the delays and filters on Odissi's vocals with a few rewind effects thrown in for good measure. Side B1. Original Seems like everyone in breaks is embracing the electro sound, and this is no exception. Groupie features a rock-influenced breakbeat and from the offset, Odissi tears right into the 'girls who keep our boys entertained'. In some ways she sounds very computerised thanks to her clever use of effects and has a Princess-Superstar-does-electro kind of feel. Odissi gives the bottom end a big, growling bassline that tends to creep up on the listener much like the Jaws theme, a jazzy keyboard hook, and drops these quaint xylophone stabs at random intervals. Side B2. Acappella For all those boys who like to incorporate Odissi's vocals onto another tune - the DJ's, the turntablists and the producers who like to keep the girls of the scene... entertained.
