Odissi - Captivated

  • Mile High Recordings is the latest offshoot to spring up within DJ Quest and Odissi's Cyberfunk recordings imprint. Mile High focuses more on the tech-funkier/electro-ey end of things and has already seen underground success with their first release - Quest's Charlies Devils and a collaboration between Quest & Odissi - Bad Acid. For her latest release Odissi goes solo and revisits the sound exhibited on her controversial breakbeat rant, Groupie. On remix duties, she brings in the fresh talents of Metric whose production talents are in demand for labels like Lot 49, Burrito and Kingsize. Side AA. Original Mix For those who have heard Groupie will familiarize themselves with Odissi's futuristic vocals and the plethora of techy stabs, electro noise and grinding bassline that Odissi's made part of her trademark sound - for those who love her sultry vocal tones be aware that she has lent her talent to the likes of Vandal, Metric and Meat Katie for forthcoming projects on Lot 49 and Adrift. The beats are tough and on a notable four to the floor tip with mysterious spy-movie style keyboard hooks and she makes this all come together with a series of razor sharp slices and quirky lyrics - I'm not too sure if I would have "dreamt of this" when thinking about breakbeat. This is one tune that would not sound out of place at a bush doof filled with hippies on acid! Side A. Metric Remix No you're not imagining that, the remix is on the A side and I believe it will be the side that will be getting the most dancefloor play - not that it's bad to be quirky and eccentric with your sound, but the dancers on the floor tend to go for something a little more accessible. Metric's remix kicks off with a classic electro arpeggio and lays down a steady tech-funky breakbeat with a good dose of syncopation. The bassline is a little more subtle yet maintains the growl of the original and Metric incorporates an old-skool electro influenced synth hook loaded with lots of filter effects, squeeks and bleeps to give it a nice 80's feel.
