  • What makes a minimal record minimal? The best contemporary minimal records are often anything but, cycling through motifs at a mile a minute. "Goal Line Techno," from an Offenbach supergroup composed of Traffic founder Julian Chenaux and Pager Records alumni Felix Kluge and Oolon, is an archetype of the style. It begins with a bubbly synth and an '80s bass lick that could've been lifted straight from a Datsun's radio. Halfway through it changes directions completely, dropping everything but the drums to let a somber chord sequence pontificate at the moon, before getting funky all over again. Even with all these ideas, the track still has a minimal sensibility, holding everything together with a grooving low-end and spacious sound design.
