  • Over the last decade, Sunil Sharpe's Earwiggle has released a steady stream of bouncy techno records backed with more unconventional dips into electro and industrial along the way. Take last year's compilation, Music For The Wilted Generation, which featured creepy-crawly techno, loopy acid and noise, or DeFeKT's militant electro EP Battery Blast. The latest 12-inch on Earwiggle is the appropriately eclectic, mind-bending The Logic Behind EP from Marco Bruno, who blends fun melodies with murky moods. "Riot" is a menacing stomper loaded with whooshing sounds and a thundering synth lead. It's a pure peak-time tool and, at 145 BPM, one for the more hardcore techno heads. Bruno stretches out over the rest of the EP. "Jacking" might be the most typical Earwiggle cut on the record, unfurling with a brash, bleepy melody complemented by rubbery kick drums and crisp percussion. But it's unpredictable, taking an unexpected turn four minutes in, pausing for a drum roll and then launching back into the lead. The pared-back drums on "Echoes" allow an electric guitar-like riff to ripple through the soundscape, adding a psychedelic wash instead of the usual big build-up. The electro-flavoured "Seduction" is tense and shadowy, with a harp-like melody that slinks between the notes of a rugged bassline. "Daydream" counteracts the darkness, balancing a skittery jungle pattern with a twinkling synthline, forming a bewitching combination of raved-up energy and melancholia—the kind of tune that might signal the end of a three-day rave in the woods. Churning with wavy rhythms, walloping drums and topsy-turvy melodies, The Logic Behind is a splash of colour on a dark techno canvas, befitting the quirky but formidable world of Earwiggle.
