Phil K @ Sweetchilli, Sydney

  • Not only was a guaranteed good night assured due to the fact another Sweetchilli was taking place, but it was time to welcome back the Melbourne main man, Phil K for another performance north of the border. It’s always good to see Phil from time to time as he always picks up new tricks and methods in his own class of controlling the CDJ’s and effects units. Firstly though Max Plowman threw down some pretty tasty tunes playing early in the night, including Slacker’s awesome ‘Memory Man’. Ben Korbel followed Max and it had been a while since I had seen Ben play, and he clearly hasn’t lost it, playing a pretty tasty tech inspired set full of pretty chunky basslines and some pretty dirty sounds. No offence to Ben, but compared to what was to follow from Phil, the low-end sounds were pretty tame. Phil K came on and from the first sound, it was ridiculously dirty, with balls a plenty in each track he played. I am assured that he also showcased some of the tracks from his upcoming Lo-Step album, which I also have been told are as filthy as the tracks he plays. His set on the night was pretty much up there with all the other quality nights I have seen Phil play at, with Phil up to his usual tricks of looping, editing, filtering and every other trick known to man kind, and what I especially like about Phil’s DJ’ing is that it ever takes away from the flow or musical aspect of his set, a point that a few other DJ’s could take on board. All in all it was a pretty solid start to the weekend, with the Chilli crowd in full force as Phil hit the decks. Special mention must go the chilli crew, or perhaps the Candy’s crew, who countered the often heat induced nature of the place by placing one of the strongest fans to have ever graced this earth. Not only did I find solace when it got hot, but I also felt like those battlers in Twister trying to escape those sweeping tornadoes.
