Ed209 vs Dappa Dan/Ctrl-Z vs Screwface - Ting Dem/Dar Licks

  • Fresh from the success of Screwface's last single, tear-out breakbeat label Hardcore Beats returns with a multi-artist release featuring collaborations with label artists and newcomers. Label co-manager teams up with newcomer Dappa Dan for the rave influenced Ting Dem whilst Screwface make their return with the dalek sampling Dar Licks which is a collaboration with breakbeat newcomer producers Ctrl-Z who've been making a name for themselves with releases on labels like Funkatech and 777 amongst others. Side A. Ed 209 vs Dappa Dan - Ting Dem Ting Dem fires off with a high pitched synth intro with a subtle breakbeat, obviously they're intent on saving the best for the main part of the tune. Once the first breakdown arrives, a hip hop vocal is chopped up asking you to "turn this m***f*** up man so it can f*** with my ear drums a lil bit!" From there a big tear-out style bass line in the vein of Ed209's past productions kicks in with a ravey influenced synth which incorporates a lot of variation and melody. In the middle, they drop the tempo to half time and concentrate mainly on the ravey synth and the dark bassline before bringing the tempo back to breaks territory. Not bad, but I found that it's not really Ed's best work to date. Side AA. Ctrl-Z vs Screwface - Dar Licks This tune starts off with an atmospheric sweep and a deep techy break with a sample of a dalek (get it? Dar Licks!) Obviously the 4 producers love the Dr as they drop a massive sample before slamming the speakers with a really hard hitting bassline of Screwface notoriety! If you've heard Screwface's Phat Bass and the tunes they've released on Broke, you'd feel the growly tones coupled with the deep dubby pads. On top of this they throw a selection of 2-bar breaks dropping bassline cuts or vocal samples or even a drum fill for a bit of variation.
