Various Artists - Battlecreek III

  • Four awesome UK producers in the field of Hip Hop/Breaks combine join forces to battle the evil known as the Sellout/Jiggy Empire. Armed with only 2 turntables & mixer, a crate full of records, spray cans and a legion of b-boy breakers, these mighty warriors board their Adidas Superstar Walkers (the cover art is worth checking out!) to fight for what is right in the world of hip hop. Nextmen - Midnight Method. There's always a funky 70's bass line in a lot of Nextmen productions. They may have watched a little too much Dirty Harry and bought the whole Lalo Schrifin back catalogue. This is hip hop for the dancefloor accompanied by a flurry of samples chopped and cut up. There's even an old skool guitar sample thrown in near the end as a breakers call. This is a very Nextmen production. Kings Of The Wild Frontier - Theme From 17. If the Nextmen track didn't get people on the dancefloor then maybe this one will. The conga drums are sure to get people pulling out the cardboard and busting out the flares and windmills. Even if you can't breakdance, this tune is damn groovy and, like above, has that old skool funky 70's feel to it. After the barrage of drum beats and 70's jazz samples, the song reaches a climax then everything cuts out and a lonely, sped up sample of "Summer In The City" gets repeated over and over until the end. I still don't know who or what 17 is and why it deserves a theme song but if this is anything to go by, then it would be wearing an Adidas tracksuit, Gazelles, headband and wristbands and it would "... sport them fresh, homes!" The Deckwrecka - Countdown. What is a track called countdown if it didn't start with one? This one does, naturally. The only cut on this vinyl with an MC on it and H.E.L. goes London style with his heavy English accent. At least he doesn't try to come off sounding like a yankee (which is good) and Deckwrecka shows how much he likes to live up to his name by cutting it up like there's really no tomorrow. A bit of a headnod, especially with that constant cowbell, and slowed down a bit more than the other tracks this still has that party feel to it. Boca45 - Steady Rocking. Scott Hendy, one half of Dynamo productions with Portishead's DJ Andy Smith, comes out with guns blazing on this block party starting gem. Also a little slowed down from the faster furious beats on the other side. This one is for the b-boys to get the power moves out. One of the drum beats sampled is from Skull Snaps' It's A New Day which Prodigy sampled for Poison, but that's not the only drum beat used. Scott Hendy cuts it up as well on this but it's not just samples which he cuts up but the bassline as well which sounds like a bunch of stabs to your chest. If you have any of the Dope On Plastic releases then you know what you are in for here - uptempo, block rockin' beats all old skool style done for 2002. Previous Battlecreek compilations saw classic breaks tracks such as Bronx Dogs' "And The Letters Spell?" and awesome hip hop/breaks producers such as Deadly Avenger, Wiseguys, Jadell and Pepe Deluxe team up to release some seriously good records.
